Smokin’ Aces

Alecia Keys

My review of Smokin Aces has been published this week in the school paper. Check out the full review at The White Online

Overall, it was actually nice to see another attempt at a stylish action/comedy romp in the same vein as Tarantino and Guy Ritchie works like Pulp Fiction and Snatch. While it’s plagued by a lot of problems such as unbalanced editing and pacing, one-dimensional characters, and pointless plot twists, it was a nice breath of fresh air to see so many colorful characters firing lots of bullets at each other. It’s got enough guns, Mexican stand-offs, and style to feed the blood-thirsty action monger inside me.

The most interesting characters in the movie to me were the Tremor Brothers, hands down. With a thing for aesthetics and throwing subtlety completely out the window, they’ll do their hits by running through the place head first and guns a blazin’. Even if it’s just one guy, even if they always injure each other in the process, even if it’s completely unnecessary to bring shotguns, grenade launchers, flamethrowers, chainsaws, machetes, dynamite, just to take down one guy, they will do it

Why? Because they’re extreme!!!!! Whoa!!!

Best part is their big scene near the end of the movie where they have to take out a room of police officers, they played a song from Prodigy called First Warning. I haven’t heard these guys in ahile, so you can imagine my excitement. Definitely fit these hardcore guys well. You can download the song here.

I love you Tremor Brothers

That’s about it. Don’t expect any depth or any characters or plot being fleshed out. Just go enjoy seeing lots of things getting shot.
